The global initiative dedicated to teaching chess to children with autism spectrum and co-occurring conditions continues its expansion into a new decade of impact.
The FIDE Infinite Chess project, a pioneering global initiative that uses the game of chess as a tool for inclusion and development, is proud to announce the official start of its 10th season in September. Since its inception in 2019, the project has grown from a single, heartfelt question in a Belarusian chess school to a worldwide movement active in 28 countries, touching the lives of over 270 children with autism and co-occurring conditions .
What began as a pilot program in six countries in January 2021 has blossomed into a comprehensive, evidence-based program. The project’s philosophy remains that chess is more than a game; it is a universal language of logic, focus, and connection that can be adapted for every learner . Through sensory-friendly environments and adaptive teaching methods, the Infinite Chess project nurtures cognitive and social-emotional skills in children, building a foundation for success that extends far beyond the chessboard.
As we are entering our 10th season, we reflect on an incredible journey of learning, growth, and connection,” said Maria Tamkovich, FIDE Infinite Chess Project Leader and Secretary of the FIDE Social Commission. “The project has been an important learning curve for both the chess world and health experts. Through direct work with children who have autism, we gained a better understanding of how chess can be made more accessible. Chess is for all – we are all one family – and FIDE is steadfast in its commitment to providing everyone, regardless of their background or life circumstances, with an opportunity to learn and play chess, as it does help make one’s life better”.
The project’s unique educational program, including a comprehensive methodological guide for teachers and parents, has now been translated into seven languages, making it accessible to a wide audience of educators and families worldwide . The training program equips teachers with structured, step-by-step guidance for integrating chess into special education, offering practical strategies for behavioral management and engagement.
The new season builds on the remarkable momentum of previous stages. Recent milestones include successful educational visits and seminars in Abu Dhabi and Tanzania, and a thriving connection with the Los Angeles chess community, where the Kindness On Board Foundation hosted a successful fundraiser.
The 10th season will see the continuation of its structured lesson program, with groups for children with ASD and inclusive mixed groups, as well as further educational seminars for teachers and parents. With the continued support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the FIDE Planning and Development Commission, and a growing network of global partners, the Infinite Chess project remains dedicated to its mission of promoting the acceptance and contribution of children with unique potential .
