At The Infinite Chess Project, we believe that the beauty of chess lies in its infinite possibilities. This April 2nd, for Autism Awareness Day, we are proud to celebrate a similar truth: the beauty of the human mind lies in its infinite diversity.
Under the theme “Celebrate Minds of All Kinds,” we recognize and honor the unique perspectives, talents, and strengths that neurodivergent individuals bring to the chessboard and to our community. For many on the autism spectrum, chess is more than just a game. It can be a sanctuary of logic, a source of comfort in its structure, and a powerful medium for social connection that transcends traditional communication.
Chess is a language spoken by millions, and at FIDE the Infinite Chess Project, we are committed to making sure everyone has a seat at the table. We understand that a quiet mind can be a deeply strategic one. The focus, pattern recognition, and dedication often associated with autism are not just compatible with chess—they are strengths that can lead to brilliant and creative play.
This mission is at the heart of the FIDE Infinite Chess Project, a dedicated global initiative working to make chess accessible and beneficial for individuals with autism and other special needs, fostering inclusion and cognitive development through the royal game.
We are proud that the project is thriving in 28 countries—Albania, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, India, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Latvia, Malawi, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa, Spain (including Menorca, Mallorca, Madrid, and Extremadura), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tanzania, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom—now reaching more than 290 children with autism and co-occurring conditions.
This growth is a testament to the power of community. We value each and every child and their parents, and we are deeply grateful to every partner who shares our mission. We are proud to contribute to this awareness journey together and warmly welcome new interested family members from around the world to join our growing community.
Join Us in Fostering Acceptance
This Autism Awareness Day, we invite our entire community—players, families, and supporters—to join us in fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusion. Let’s move beyond mere awareness to genuine appreciation for the different ways people think, learn, and interact with the world.
Whether you play online or over-the-board, in total silence or with stimming, your way of playing enriches our collective experience. Today, we celebrate you.

Throughout the entire month of April, The Infinite Chess Project will be sharing stories that highlight the beautiful intersection of autism and chess.
We want to hear from you—the parents who witness the joy of discovery, the coaches who nurture unique talents, the kids who find their voice on the 64 squares, and anyone with a story to tell.
If you have an experience you’d like to share, please reach out to us. Your story could be featured on our website and social media as we work to build a chess community where every mind can flourish.
Share your story or message of support using the hashtag #CelebrateMindsOfAllKinds or contact us directly.
Together, we can shine a light on the infinite potential within every player.
