FIDE Infinite Chess Project

The global chess community is on a journey – a mission to ensure the royal game is open, accessible, and welcoming to all. This mission lies at the heart of the FIDE Infinite Chess project, and it is with great pride that we spotlight a pioneering event that perfectly embodies this spirit: the “Chess for Champions of Determination” tournament, recently organised by the New Zealand Chess Federation (NZCF) with support of Parkside Specialist School.

Spearheaded by NZCF Councillor, SLT and Infinite Chess partner Evguenia (Jennya) Charomova and Vice-President Paul Spiller, this event was not just a competition; it was a carefully curated community gathering designed to celebrate neurodiversity and provide a safe, supportive space for all players to enjoy the game they love.

Crafting the perfect environment: a sensory-smart approach

Understanding the specific needs of the participants was the cornerstone of the event’s success. The organisers highlighted several key environmental factors that made a significant difference:

A calm and comfortable venue: the hall kindly provided by Parkside Specialist School was chosen for its perfect attributes: ample space, padded floors to reduce noise, and low lighting. This thoughtful setup helped minimise sensory overload, allowing players to focus and feel at ease.

Spacious and structured play: Tables were well-spaced, with only two players per table. This layout reduced feelings of being overwhelmed and provided a more intimate, less intimidating playing experience.

Essential amenities: The availability of on-site disability toilets was a non-negotiable and crucial detail, ensuring accessibility for everyone.

Building community, On and Off the board

Beyond the moves on the chessboard, the event fostered connection and a sense of belonging.

Food and Fellowship: complimentary coffee, tea, and food were provided. As Jennya Charomova noted, this was vital for an event where many participants may face financial challenges. Sharing a meal broke down barriers and created a warm, informal setting for players and families to connect.

Certificates for All: every participant received a certificate of participation, a simple yet powerful gesture that made every individual feel recognised, valued, and included.

Safety and Support, the non-negotiables: The organisers were unequivocal about the importance of safety for a successful and sustainable event of this nature.

Professional security: the presence of security guards was identified as a critical component, this measure ensured a secure environment for all attendees, giving families and organisers peace of mind.

Expert volunteers: the event was supported by amazing volunteers who were experienced in behaviour management. Their skill in relating to the players, de-escalating potential issues, and making everyone feel comfortable was invaluable.

Learning and looking forward

A key part of the Infinite Chess philosophy is continuous improvement, and the organizers team is already building on their experience. For future events, they plan to incorporate shorter instructions and use more visual aids to support the understanding of rules, making the game even more accessible.

They also highlighted the success of a book and equipment stall, which helped players get familiar with different chess sets and clocks in a low-pressure setting.

“This was our first tournament,” Charomova reflected, “there is always room for improvement!”

The “Chess for Champions of Determination” event stands as a shining example and a practical blueprint for national federations and organisers worldwide. It demonstrates that with thoughtful planning, a focus on safety, and a deep commitment to community, chess can truly become a game for everyone.

The FIDE Infinite Chess project congratulates Jennya Charomova, Paul Spiller, and the entire New Zealand Chess Federation for their groundbreaking work.
