FIDE Infinite Chess Project

Infinite chess in Kenya

When 14-year-old Nathan joined the FIDE Infinite Chess program at Autism School International in January 2025, he was the quiet student observing from the sidelines. Under the guidance of his dedicated chess coach and Infinite Chess partner in Kenya Phylis Ngigi, something remarkable began to unfold. Though initially reserved, Nathan’s innate understanding of chess pieces and their movements hinted at the potential waiting to be unlocked.

Over the weeks, that quiet curiosity transformed into deep engagement. Nathan didn’t just move pieces—he studied strategy, learned to anticipate threats, and developed the confidence to deliver decisive checkmates. His progress was undeniable.

“Beyond his personal growth, Nathan started helping other children during free time,” shares Tr. Winnie, Director at Autism School International. “He’d gently guide them through moves, showing patience beyond his years.”

To further nurture his passion, the FIDE Infinite Chess team introduced Nathan to online platforms like ChessKid and Chess.com, where he eagerly tackled lessons and puzzles. His dedication was clear—every session saw him more focused, more inquisitive, and more determined to improve.

The breakthrough came at the Jumuiya Ya Afrika Mashariki Open Chess Tournament, organized by The Gift of Chess. In this inclusive event featuring players with various disabilities, Nathan faced his biggest challenge yet – competing in the Under-18 category against older, more experienced opponents.

True to his nature, Nathan’s first game revealed his kind spirit. In his first game, Nathan lost—not due to a lack of skill, but because he instinctively helped his opponent correct unsafe moves. By the second round, he found his competitive balance, blending kindness with the spirit of the game. By the end of the day, he had secured 3 out of 6 points, an outstanding achievement for a debutant.

Most remarkably, Nathan earned 3rd place among all players with disabilities, a testament to his resilience, strategic growth, and unwavering spirit.
