FIDE Infinite Chess Project

Ulaanbaatar, February 25 – A special chess tournament for children with Autism Spectrum was successfully organized at the Grand Hall of the Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar Hotel as part of the Infinite Chess project. The event featured a friendly competition and a brief training session conducted by Grandmaster Bilguun Sumiya, coach of Mongolia’s national chess team.

The Infinite Chess project seeks to harness the cognitive and social benefits of chess, providing a structured yet adaptable environment where children with autism spectrum can develop strategic thinking, patience, and confidence.

Approximately 20 children with autiam spectrum participated in the tournament, with the top three winners receiving cash prizes:
– 1st Place: P. Javkhlan – $300
– 2nd Place: A. Ochbileg – $150
– 3rd Place: S. Siilen – $90

All participants were also presented with gifts, making the event a joyful and memorable occasion.

During the training session, GM Bilguun Sumiya introduced the fundamentals of chess to the children and their parents, emphasizing how the game can enhance focus, problem-solving skills, and emotional regulation —key areas of development for children with autism spectrum. Research has shown that chess can be particularly beneficial for neurodiverse individuals, helping improve memory, patience, and social interaction in a structured setting.

The Infinite Chess initiative aligns with global efforts to promote inclusive sports, demonstrating that chess—a game of infinite possibilities—can be adapted to meet diverse learning needs. Similar programs have been implemented in countries like the United States, India, and the UK and 25 more worldwide, where chess has been integrated into special education curricula with remarkable success.
